Internal Competitions
A large element of the clubs season revolves around the competitions, which are held roughly on a monthly basis, as shown in the current programme. There are eight competitions - but, in each case Print and PDI (projected digital images) competitions are run in parallel:
Members can submit to each competition a maximum of 2 prints and 2 PDIs; an exception is the Three on a Theme competition for which members may submit only 1 set of images for each of the PDI and Print competitions.
Hand in dates are generally 3 or 4 weeks prior to the competition to give time for organisation and judging.
A judge is appointed for each competition and will appear on the night to give critique on each image. The judge will also select a top 4. These images are awarded points as follows:
1st place 7 points
2nd place 6 points
3rd place 5 points
4th place 4 points
In addition judges may identify images as “Highly Commended”. These are each awarded 1 point.
All placed and Highly Commended images are displayed on the club’s website (Competition Winners) as soon as possible after judging, along with a running Points Total.
At the end of each season, at the Social, the members with the most points awarded for the Prints and for the PDIs are identified as the Print / PDI Photographer of the Year, and the member with the most points overall is identified as the club’s Photographer of the Year.
Competition Rules
The main rules governing all competitions are outlined below :-
* Images must be your own work
* Images should not be more than 3 years old
* Individual images can be used in a maximum of 3 competitions
* Once a image has won a competition it cannot be used again (other than as part of a Three on a Theme entry)
* The image should display no information which identifies the author
There are other rules concerning how your images are presented, which are as follows :-
Prints are to be submitted to the Print Competition Secretary (Linda Snaith) at a club meeting. Also, a PDI copy (same sizes etc. as PDI for PDI competitions) of each print is to be submitted by email to [email protected]
* Prints may be printed commercially, or by the author using chemical or ink jet printing methods etc.
* Prints can be up to a maximum of 50 x 40 cm including the mount.
* Prints can be either colour or mono except where the competition specifies colour or mono only.
*A label must be placed on the reverse side of the mounted print in the bottom right corner clearly stating the title of the image.
PDIs are to be submitted to the PDI Competition Secretary (Fiona Haughton) by email to [email protected]
* PDIs should be sized to be a maximum of 1600 pixels long by 1200 pixels high. (This is to match the maximum projectors resolution; also this is the standard required for external competitions) Images should be in the sRGB colour format.
* PDIs can be either colour or mono except where the competition specifies colour or mono only.
PDIs are probably the easiest way to dip your toes into competition. It is great fun but beware as it can be addictive!
N.B. when submitting PDIs as an email attachment ensure that the image size is set to “actual” on the email software.
